About The Historic Pearl

The buildings and the story behind San Antonio’s Pearl district

Our focus: heritage and architecture

The Historic Pearl is an independent website about the history and the built heritage of the former Pearl Brewing Company campus, just north of downtown San Antonio.

Brewing on the site dates to the 1880s, and the Pearl brand became one of the best-known beers in Texas before the brewery closed in 2001. What makes the district interesting today is how much of that industrial past is still visible: the brewhouse, the smokestack, warehouse and stable buildings, and the relationship between the campus and the San Antonio River. Since the closure, the site has been redeveloped as a mixed-use neighborhood, reusing many of the old structures rather than replacing them.

This site tries to explain that story clearly for curious visitors, students of adaptive reuse, and San Antonio residents. It also includes practical pages on visiting, dining and shopping for people who want to see the place in person.
